The Empordanesa chicken breed originated in the Empordà region of Catalonia, Spain. The breed was developed over time through the selection of local chicken breeds, resulting in a unique breed that is well-suited to the region's hot and dry climate.

Empordanesa chickens are primarily kept for egg production. They are known for their excellent egg-laying abilities and can lay up to 200 large, white eggs per year. In addition to their egg-laying abilities, Empordanesa chickens are also known for their high-quality meat.
